Finasteride and Suicidal Depression
Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, medical journal specializing in mental disorders, especially depression, clinical psychiatry and others, published a study that found evidence that men who regularly consume finasteride, a drug for treatment of sexual dysfunction, and also used as hair loss treatment, might have high incidence of depression and suicidal thoughts
Dr. Michael S. Irwig, MD, an professor at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, is the author of the research, he works as an assistant professor in the division of endocrinology at the university
Finasteride and Sexual Dysfunction
A group of 61 men, all healthy, before having persistent sexual dysfunction, were interviewed by Dr. Irwing. After the emergence of sexual dysfunction, they were all regular users and consumers of finasteride.
Dr. Irwing gathered information about psychiatric and medical history of each patient, use of alcohol, use of different oral prescription medications and medical history of sexual function
In parallel, the dr.Irwing, interviewed a group of 29 men, control group, who had never used the product, but suffering from hair loss, also these men had no psychiatric history and had previously used psychiatric medications.
Dr. Irwing applied the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI, BDI-II) test, which was invented by Dr. Aaron T. Beck, instrument that measures the severity of depression in adults through the application of a questionnaire of 21 questions.
Finasteride and Depression Test
The results of the test were revealing with finasteride user group: 11% had mild symptoms; 28% had moderate symptoms; and 36% had severe symptoms of depression. And the most surprising 44% of men studied had suicidal thoughts.
In the other group or control group, only 3% reported suicidal thoughts. There were no symptoms of moderate to severe depression and only 10% had symptoms of mild depression.
Patients with high risk of depression should be cautious and consult one or several physicians before consuming the drug. Merk, the manufacturer of Propecia, from 2010, adds to its list of possible side effects, depression
Of course, additional studies are needed to confirm the thesis of dr. Irwing, but the unwanted side effects of prolonged use of finasteride, should be discussed by doctor and patient.
