Finasteride

The pharmaceutical industry continuously investigates in the hopes of discovering medicines to solve the problem of androgenetic alopecia, more known with the acronym of AGA. New remedies for hair loss are launched to the market each year, but at the moment, only two have been approved by the FDA for the treatment of genetic hair loss.

Finasteride has been approved only for use by males and minoxidil  to be used by men and women.

For treatment of prostate hypertrophy and as a hair loss treatment, the company Merck sells finasteride under the brand Proscar and Propecia

In 1992 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved for the first time the use of finasteride for the treatment of benign growth of the prostate with doses of 5 mg per day.

But unexpectedly found that males who used finasteride to treat problems of prostatic hyperplasia were promoting at the same time new hair growth or simply stopped hair loss. The medicine acts as a selective blocker of the conversion of testosterone into Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) also known as androstanolone or 5α-dihydrotestosterone

For this reason were the first trials for the treatment of androgenic alopecia by applying finasteride 5 mg over 28 days and as a result was obtained decrease values of Dihydrotestosterone

Subsequent studies observe the results of treatment  for androgenic alopecia, depended on the dose and the decrease in the levels of Dihydrotestosterone in the scalp

After 1 year of treatment, a hair in light to moderate but increase was observed at a dose of 1 mg per day to prolong treatment for 2 years the results were encouraging: 66% of treated males observed improvement in some degree in the growth of your hair.

In women however not yielded the same results. A group of women postmenopausal applied to them during a year finasteride 1 mg daily but without any results. With more optimistic results has been applied to women finasteride 1 mg daily oral

Finasteride and male pattern baldness

Men who suffer from moderate or mild hair loss and take daily 1 milligram of finasteride can recover some hair, so reveals a 5-year study conducted by dermatologists.

Men with male pattern baldness, treated, recovered hair 48%, and 42% discontinued hair loss. Effects  are visible between 6 to 12 months and the beneficial effect lasts while the drug is consumed.

In another study, men treated with 1 milligram daily for cases of androgenetic alopecia, found that 86% had stable growth of hair over 10 years, many not found any profit the first year but they found benefit later.

It was also noted that long-term benefited most men over 30 years and only 6% had side effects

Finasteride and side effects

Even if the side effects are not very significant, there are side effects that range in ranges from 1.1% to 7.2%, these effects include depression, impotence, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, less volume of ejaculation, testicular pain, impaired sexual function. In some cases the erectile dysfunction persists even after stopping the medication.

This hairloss treatment should be indefinite, if left to use, hair loss problems returning. Its price is high.
